Recently, I had the pleasure of photographing Josie, from Murray High School at the Salt Flats, and let me tell you—it was incredible. The Salt Flats offer this surreal, minimalist backdrop that makes any outfit or pose pop. The neutral tones of the salt paired with the wide, open sky create an effortless and timeless look. It’s gives that “editorial but natural” vibe that seniors (and their moms!) love.
The Look: A Flowing Dress + Natural Movement
For this session, Josie wore a flowy blue dress and a form fitting black dress. Dresses like this work beautifully at the Salt Flats because they add movement and texture against the smooth, white ground.
I always recommend flowy fabrics for Salt Flats sessions—whether it’s a maxi dress, a skirt, or even wide-leg pants. The contrast between the simple background and the flowy fabrics makes the senior really stand out.
The Light and Reflection
One of the best parts about the Salt Flats is the way the light reflects off the ground and the puddles. We shot in the afternoon and right before sunset and the entire area lit up with this soft light. The dress picked up that light beautifully, and the subtle reflection on the salt created a dreamy, almost mirrored effect in some of the shots.
Posing and Vibes
We kept the posing soft and natural with walking, twirling and laughing . The goal is always to make seniors feel comfortable and confident, and Josie absolutely nailed it.
